.

‘We Touched the Sky’: the new online educational resource, freely available HERE, NOW

copy-Chile-40-Years-On-LogoSmall1Learn about the Chilean experience, via video interviews with exiled Chileans living in Britain. They tell their life stories, from their initial inspiration as Allende and Popular Unity came to power in 1970, the extraordinary achievements they were part of, and their personal experiences in the run-up to, and on the day of the military coup (Sept 11th 1973) and its aftermath.

Four Chileans with widely different experiences tell of the euphoria of being part of huge social advances, the repression they suffered, the solidarity they received, and their arrival in Britain to make new lives as exiles and activists.

Public meeting in Sheffield: “We Touched the Sky”.

Joint SYMAAG/Sheffield Chilean Community event to learn about the experience of Chilean refugees who came to Sheffield.

Thursday, January 26, 7-8.30pm (doors open at 6.30 for pre-meeting refreshments), Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James’ St, Sheffield S1 2EW

It’s easy to forget that refugees have been welcomed, and their experience of fighting injustice has been valued here. But that was part of the experience of Chilean refugees who came to South Yorkshire in the 1970’s fleeing the results of the military coup there.

While the UK Government did nothing to defend the elected Chilean Government against dictatorship, local trade unions welcomed and supported activists who shared their organising skills and courage with us.

Chile40YearsOn & the Chilean Community have created We Touched the Sky an online course explaining what happened in Chile, why people were forced to become refugees and what it was like to arrive and live in South Yorkshire. To publicise this fascinating resource and to celebrate the solidarity shown by local people, South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG) has organised a joint meeting with the Sheffield Chilean community on Thursday 26th January

Our main speaker is Dr Jasmine Gideon, senior lecturer in development studies in the Geography Department at Birkbeck, University of London. She has recently published research on the health and well-being of Chilean refugee women in the UK. She will be joined by speakers from the Chilean community in Sheffield and a representative from the Sheffield labour movement who supported Chilean refugees in the 1970s.

The meeting is free though we’d welcome a donation to cover room-hire costs

As always, don’t let lack of money be a barrier to attending any SYMAAG events. Bring your ticket/receipt to the meeting and we can reimburse you in cash at the meeting for any reasonable travel expenses. Or get in touch with us before the meeting if you need to.

The graphic novel ‘Introduction to Chile’ in e-book version now!

51nGMHhW0fL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_We are pleased to announce the e-book version of the Graphic Novel “Introduction to Chile”. Originally produced in 1975 by the Chile Solidarity Campaign, and authored by Chris Welch, the whole book is now available to download from Amazon. It’s a great read, with humour and great cartoons, as well as an excellent run down of Chilean history from the Conquistadors to Allende’s Socialist Government of Popular Unity, the Pinochet coup, the Solidarity movement here and the Chileans’ lives as political exiles in Britain.
Somehow an ebook version brings out sharply the story’s contemporary relevance – to Latin America and the worldwide onward march of neo-liberalism.
The download costs £2.06 – it’s a bargain, but we would say that! By all means forward on the link to anyone you think might be interested in downloading the e-book.

To get the download, just go to: Amazon

Adelante!! – and hope you like the e-book
