Sara vivió  su exilio con su familia en la ciudad de Birmingham y luego en Sheffield, donde fue una activa miembro del Grupo Los Andes, de nuestra organización.

Desde estas páginas hacemos llegar nuestras más sentidas condolencias a sus hijas Vanessa y Susana, a sus respectivas familias,  como también,  a su familia en Chile, en Argentina, a sus  ex compañeros del Partido Socialista, y a sus amigas y amigos.

Mensaje de la familia: Queridos todos, es con mucho dolor que les comunicamos que nuestra querida madre Sarita Del Carmen Bahamondez Fierro de Jara falleció el 4 de enero 2012 a las 4.35 de la tarde. Sus últimos respiros fueron muy tranquilos y suavecitos con sus dos hijas (Vanessa y Susana) una a cado lado.

Jorge compartió activamente su exilio con todos nosotros y nos deja un inmenso testimonio de amistad, alegría y solidaridad.

Jorge se nos fue, acompañado por todos sus seres queridos, a tempranas horas de esta madrugada .

Jorge’s funeral service will be held on Thursday 17th November at 10am, at Mother of God & Saint Wilfrid Church ,  Abbeydale Road, Sheffield S7 1DX

The burial will take place at Abbey Lane Cemetery at 11:30am.

There will be a wake at Cubanas Tapas Bar, on Trippet, Lane 34 Trippet Lane, Sheffield from 1pm until 5pm, with Chilean food and drinks, and the opportunity to celebrate his life together with his family.

Recordando a nuestro Compañero Jorge Valeria,

Como es del conocimiento de toda nuestra Comunidad en Gran Bretana, el  deceso de nuestro Compañero Jorge Valeria,  hacemos llegar nuestras más sinceras condolencias a todo su nucleo familiar, tanto en Inglaterra, como a sus familiares en Chile, Argentina y Canadá.

Ha dejado a su  familia para juntarse con Norma. Detrás deja el dolor y la pena de sus hijas,hijo, nietas y nietos.

Viejo militante Socialista, se incorporó al trabajo solidario y partidario desde su llegada a este país.Por aquel entonces la solidaridad con Chile, emergía con fuerza, producto en gran parte, por el trabajo que el  exilio ejercía en el exterior. Con una variedad  de iniciativas y actividades, que abarcaban desde conciertos, eventos sociales, colectas publicas, campeonatos de futbol, etc. en los cuales Jorge siempre tuvo  una activa participación junto siempre a su compañera y esposa Norma.

Como hincha y jugador de fútbol que fue, Jorge, como muchos otros, combinó sus actividades futbolísticas con el quehacer solidario. Así al calor de las pichangas de los Sábados, se crea el Deportivo Rotherham, el cual Jorge presidió por varios años.Luego de los amistosos, con los compañeros chilenos de Leeds y Selby, nace la iniciativa e invitación del compañero Helmut Bastidas (QEPD), para organizar el Primer Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol en el exilio, al que  siguieron otros 3 más en Rotherham y Sheffield.

Los cuales, desde la casa de los Valeria, se organizaban y se hacían los preparativos para cada campeonato.

Asi también como dirigente del  Latin American United, y estando semi retirado de las canchas, debió también entrar a jugar para completar el cupo de 7 jugadores minimo y evitar así la multa de la Asociacion de la liga Inglesa.

Con el correr de los años y, junto con ver crecer a sus nietos en su vida familiar, Jorge se integra al trabajo comunitario y Solidario que comenzaba a activar La Asociación en el Centro de los Chilenos, en Sheffield y que hoy pese a muchos obstáculos, su actividad y objetivos aún permanecen; en los cuales Jorge tomó parte, inclusive hasta unas semanas antes de alejarse para siempre. Como asi también nos acompañó en Agosto al Festival  Víctor Jara. En efecto participó en los tres Festivales que se han realizado hasta hoy.

Podríamos seguir relatando muchas vivencias o anécdotas acerca de Jorge; Pero en cada uno que lo conoció y compartió con Jorge, quedará el recuerdo de las alegrías y penas compartidas con él durante nuestra  vida en el exilio.

Estimado Pedro,
Recibe mis condolencias para ti, para la familia de Jorge Valeria y por supuesto para todos los amigos que integran esa linda organizacion de ustedes, que ayudan desde tan lejos a estas comunidades que de una u otra manera son parte de su patria, linda hermosa y solidaria , que no se olvida de sus hermanos  que hace un tiempo no muy lejano tuvieron que partir de su Chile querido, y que hicieron patria en una nueva tierra.
Hoy cuando recibi tu correo, me encontraba en una actividad en la escuela consistente en una Olimpiada Matematica dirigida a los alumnos de Tercer y Cuarto año basico de todas las escuelas rurales de nuestra comuna. Les  comente de tu correo y ellos recuerdan las visitas que se hizo a sus escuelas, con motivo de la entrega de los primeros computadores que los alumnos de ellas empezaron a utlizar.
De las escuelas que visitó Bernabe creo que la mas indicada seria a mi parecer la escuela de Puyamavida, que es unidocente, tiene en la actualidad 17 alumnos y la sigue dirigiendo el profesor Prudencio Lipan
El lunes en el acto semanal de inauguración de clases, personalmenmte recordaré a mis alumnos sobre la trascendencia e importancia que  tuvo para nosotros el conocerlos, el haberlos tenido en nuestras escuelas con su maravilloso aporte que a muchos de los niños .como te señale anteriormente los inicio en esta nueva forma de trabajar o buscar informcion para resolver sus tareas.
Recuerdo de igual forma el regalo de la silla de ruedas que actualmente la usa un vecino del sector Dadinco, el cual gracias a ellas udo salir de su casa y continuar su vida lo mas integrada a naturaleza .
en  fin son muchas los casos que gracias a ustedes pudieron mejorar en parte sus condiciones de vida.
Por eso gracias gracias a los amigos de  ChileSCDA y los acompañamos en su duelo.

To our friend and compañero Jorge Valeria

I offer both my personal and the Chilean community’s condolences to Jorge’s family.

I would also like to thank Jeannette, Quito and Paola for giving me the opportunity to provide some farewell thoughts to my friend and compañero Jorge on behalf of his community.

Today we bury a good man.  Today we bury part of our history.

That child that personally experienced the harsh reality of the Big Depression that hit our country, who arrived with his family in Rotherham, like many of us, with nothing but the clothes they wore and with a baggage full of broken dreams.

Within a context of pain, shock and reflection, we in the Chilean community have begun to rescue individual and collective memories of Jorge.  They build a picture of an extraordinary life which, in the passing of each day, was expressed almost silently, as though trying to avoid attention.  Jorge’s was a life of immense richness that was enveloped in great humility.

Jorge let us know, in his own way, his vision of the world and society, his values and ideals.  We saw him wave to the flag of his beloved Socialist Party; the flag of social justice; of international solidarity, the flag of  Human Rights, the flag of friendship.

He never mentioned it but we observed and were witnesses of his love for Norma, his lifetime compañera, and his love for his family. Moreover we know that the scent to love flowers was never absent in his home, similarly this has not been missing in the dwelling that, as from today, he returns to share with her again.  We all know that he never managed to recover from the immense blow of Norma’s premature departure – feelings of loss that we shared with him.  We understand now that the apprehension, the hastiness that we could detect in Jorge during his last weeks was not created by the fear of his own possible departure from this world, but was a result of that immense and indescribable inner restlessness that lovers feel before the long awaited encounter.

Football was his other passion of his life.  Football understood at a roots level, like an intrinsic part of the neighbourhood, of the community.  He would recreate with heavy doses of nostalgia, accompanied by cigarettes and cups of coffee, that special atmosphere that used to surround his footy matches, the times he shared with his footy friends and the post-match celebrations at his local Quinta de Recreo.  This very spirit was the origin of the National Football Championships of Chileans in the UK that is an important part of our exile history in Great Britain.  Jorge lived, shared and enjoyed, in his own way, the life of his community to the full. He participated in every community initiative with that smile on his face, with that tranquil manner and unique way of doing things.

As we all know, life in exile can be very difficult and rarely free of personal frustration and tensions.  Jorge apparently didn’t experience this.  He was always where his community was. At the demonstration; dancing ‘cueca’, the Chilean national dance in the Independence party; in the solidarity concerts; protesting at Virginia Water, in  front of the mansion  where the Chilean dictator was being detained; collecting support for poor rural schools in the south of Chile; sending aid for the victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Chile; in the Andes Group, busy designing, and using scissors, needles and coloured threads to make patchworks saturated with memories of Chile and of exile; cooking Chilean traditional dishes together with members of the community in the Victor Jara Festival in Wales, (he never missed a single festival).  The list goes on, and is evidenced in the photographs that fill our community’s website.

We became friends, good friends.  He used to visit me on Sundays and sometimes during the week.  He would show up at any time.  Literally.  In the Chilean manner, he would just open the door and walk in.  I had the privilege of sharing wonderful moments together with Jorge.  We talked at length about our own ghosts, bred during the dictatorship.  We shared memories, about personal and community projects, about Norma, we talked about his solitude, we discussed human issues, and the divine.  Although he wasn’t feeling one hundred per cent and wouldn’t normally eat, on a couple of occasions he suggested that we cook a popular and nostalgic Chilean dish: ‘Porotos con riendas’, a dish based on beans, spaghetti and chorizos.  We really enjoyed these moments!

I was very pleased when he accepted my suggestion of going to the Victor Jara Festival in Machynlleth, Wales, last August.  I drove his car as he was feeling very run down by then.  After a couple of hours of driving, and in the middle of nowhere in Wales, Jorge began showing an uncharacteristic uneasiness and to express himself in very clear and direct Chilean Spanish: he wanted a coffee break there and then!  After a few minutes the vision became a reality and we reached a big coffee place that appeared to be waiting just for us on the side of the road.  Upon my return from the WC, Jorge was waiting for me at a table with two massive full English breakfasts and mugs of coffee!  I said to myself “I’m sure he will only try a bit of it…”  How wrong I was! To my astonishment, the content of his plate rapidly disappeared.  I will never forget his face and the expression of satisfaction after he finished his breakfast.  We saw a different, a renewed Jorge throughout that weekend.  When we said goodbye to each other once back in Sheffield he said how he had enjoyed the time in Wales.  In his own way, it was his farewell party from his community.

Jorge passed away the 4th of November.  That date had special meaning for Jorge, and for all of us.  On that very day, 38 years ago Jorge celebrated what was going to be one of the happiest days of his life. Dr Salvador Allende had been elected President of Chile!

I would like to end with a quote from a farewell note to Jorge of a member of the second generation of exiles here.

“…My old friend and fighter in exile.  I thank you for having shared with us this long and hard pain of having to live so far from our people and always thinking in going back one day.  You accomplished your job here and you will always be in both the heart of Chile and ours for ever and ever, compañero Jorge… one day we will meet again… Peace and Love”

Jorge is an integral part of our memory, together with compañeros y compañeras Silvia, Carlos, Sonia, Rodrigo, Norma, Renán, Andrea y el Guatón.  We can’t afford not to keep them in our thoughts.  We have to continue cherishing them and treasuring their lives.  As Pablo Neruda says in his poem ‘It is Forbidden!’: It is forbidden to forget!

It is forbidden to miss someone without

cheering, to forget his eyes, his smile,

just because your paths stopped being embraced,

to forget his past and pay it with his present.

Este sábado Maria Jesús (que es cuenta cuentos profesional en Chile) nos viene a leer el cuento de la Caperucita Roja – no se lo pierdan a las 10:30am. Luego haremos una manualidad y cantamos.

 

De 11:30 am a 12:00 merendamos juntos (no se olviden de traer su merienda y si desean algo para compartir con los demás).

 

En abril el comité acordó que la colaboración para cubrir gastos de alquiler, material y seguro es £2 por cada niño (+ £1 por cada hermanito).

El grupo de chilenos que convergió al  ‘Sheffield Town Hall’  desde el mediodía  al ritmo de cacerolas, cantos y CEACHEIs interrumpió la tranquilidad del sábado de los sheffielders. Muchos de ellos se aproximaron al grupo con el propósito de enterarse en más detalles de las demandas  del estudiantado chileno.


Llamó muchísimo la atención la huelga de hambre que sostienen cinco estudiantes del Liceo A-131 de Buin: Francia Gárate (18), Felipe Sanhueza (18), Kamila Rubilar (17), Matías Ortega (18) y Gloria Negrete (19). Se transmitieron muchos mensajes de apoyo a ellos y en  particular a Matías Ortega quien cumplió 32 día de ayuno.

Que vivan los estudiantes!!

Adelante, con todas las fuerzas de la historia!!

Esa fecha recuerda a todas las personas que fueron detenidas y que se encuentran en lugares ocultos, fuera de contacto con sus seres queridos, prensa o público en general.

Organizaciones de derechos humanos calculan que entre 1966 y 1986 unas 90.000 personas ”desaparecieron” en países como Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, México, Colombia, Perú, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay y Haití. Esta cifra incluye a niños de corta edad y a niños que nacieron mientras sus madres estaban detenidas en países como Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala y Uruguay.

 

ChileSCDA convoca a recordar a todas las víctimas del terrorismo de Estado del dictador Pinochet, desaparecidas en Chile y también a quienes se encuentran desaparecidos en América Latina y en el mundo junto con Amnesty International el MARTES 30 de agosto desde las 16:30 hasta las 19:30 en el Sheffield Town Hall steps. Talking about his work to ChileSCDA, Luis says “This is regarding my current photographic project. It consist in the construction of WebPages showing ‘Rotherham Now & Then’ in a series of old and new photographs. Over the years Rotherham has gone through a gradual change of transformation and many parts of our landscape have changed for ever. Once a building has gone, it is no longer with us. I hope that this visual project in some ways may demonstrate those changes”... The progress of the project can be seen by visiting Luis’ website. …..

All the photographs of  ‘Old Rotherham’ displayed in this project belong to Rotherham Family History Society who has an extensive collection of photographs showing our past. The Society has many thousands of photographs of places in and around Rotherham. Many of their photographs were taken from the 1950’s onwards by local photographers George Bentley and Colin Leonard.

A sample of the project will be displayed at ‘Rotherham Family History Fair’ on Saturday 26th March in Heeringthorpe, Rotherham. 2011, 10am to 4pm, Herringthorpe United Reformed Church, Wickersley Road, Rotherham S60 4JN. The Church is very near ‘Stag’ roundabout. There is a small admission charge of £1.

The ‘Rotherham Family History Fair’ is an annual event attracting hundreds of people and other historical societies from the region will be present.

Those friendly matches against the Chileans from Leeds, Manchester, Scotland etc. Rotherham against Sheffield too. The inauguration of Allende Way in Darnall etc and many more. My attic is loaded with our past’

El ‘Completo Party’ organizado por Berna y Ester en ayuda al proyecto Las Salinas resultó todo un éxito. La convocatoria atrajo caras nuevas de la comunidad chilena, las no tan nuevas como también a las establecidas… para ayudar a la causa pero también para disfrutar las gloriosas empanaditas de queso y los añorados completos chilenos (bueno, con salchichas alemanas, mostaza francesa, pan del Morrisons,  pero con mayonesa y pebre casero..)

Se reunieron £120 que Berna y Ester entregarán ‘en vivo y en directo’ a los cros del proyecto en Talcahuano.

Berna y Ester se ganan una vez más un aplauso… !

Completo Party en Beneficio del proyecto Las Salinas de Talcahuano.

Venga a probar los ricos completos y las empanaditas de queso donde Berna y Ester este domingo 8 de agosto. Todos los fondos que se recauden irán directamente al proyecto que Chile Earthquake Appeal / ChileSCDA apoya en Talcahuano.

Bernabé y Ester visitarán el area afectada por el terremoto y en particular el proyecto Las Salinas a fines de este mes.

Las comunidades de Salinas 1 y 2, de Talcahuano, se vieron fuertemente afectadas por el terremoto y tsunami y el objetivo del proyecto es el apoyo del trabajo de  mejoramiento del entorno y la recuperación de “nuestras areas devastadas, nuestras casas dañadas, el cuidado de la salud mental y el bienestar psicológico de nuestras familias, la recuperación ambiental de un entorno fuertemente afectado por la contaminación, la educación, la recreación y esparcimiento de vecinos, principalmente jóvenes y niños de diferentes edades como forma de reencontrarnos con el sector en que vivimos”.

Tom, aged 33, from Walkley, is heading to the Alps with his mountain bike to participate in the Passportes Du Soleil event on the weekend of June 26- 27.

It’s a 75km route through the mountains between France and Switzerland.

Tom said: “I’ll be riding with two colleagues and we hope to complete the whole length in a day, and ride back again the next day.

“It’s a really hardcore event, there is a risk of injury because some of the downhill slopes on the course are pretty extreme.

“But fingers crossed, I’ll be back in one piece. It’ll be a fantastic experience.”

The course reaches altitudes of more than 2,000 metres and hundreds of mountain bikers are set to take part.

Tom, a director of city-based Navitas Solar Installations Ltd, has been practising hard in his spare time, pedalling up to 40 miles a week on routes around the Peak District.

So far, he has raised £400 in sponsorship but is appealing for more donations before he sets out.

He is supporting the Chile Earthquake Appeal – a cause close to his heart because partner Miriam Rivas-Aguilar comes from the country and is the appeal’ treasurer.

More than 450 people were killed by the earthquake and the resulting tsunami which struck central Chile in February, destroying buildings, bridges and roads in coastal settlements around the industrial city of Concepción. Electricity, water and phone lines were cut.

The region is still devastated and many areas remain without water.

Tom said: “There is a large Chilean community based in Sheffield who have families in the area of the earthquake and they formed the appeal. The region is still in a bad way and the Chilean Government is not doing enough to help.

“What I have raised so far does not seem like much but just 80p can buy items for purifying the water.”

A spokesman for the Chile Earthquake Appeal, chaired by Pedro Fuentes, who lives in Sheffield, said: “Contacts and families in Chile tell us of people living in makeshift shelters in the hills and advise us there is a severe shortage of essentials, which will become critical as winter approaches.

“This includes non-perishable food, winter clothing, household essentials, tools and light machinery.

“Funds raised through this appeal will be used to support emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery activities for communities affected by the disaster in the earthquake-stricken cities and settlements.”

The huge tsunami waves struck a vast coastal area within minutes of the earthquake, killing people, destroying homes and all fishing boats and flooding half a kilometre inland.

The worst hit area is Concepción, Chile’s main industrial city where most business and the productive activity have been suspended.

Contacts and families in Chile tell us of people living in makeshift shelters in the hills and advised us that there was a severe shortage of essentials, which will soon become critical as the winter approaches. This includes:  winter clothing, household essentials, tools and light machinery.

The funds raised through this appeal will be used to support emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery activities for communities affected by the disaster in the earthquake stricken cities and settlements in coastal Central-South Chile

This appeal is asking for your help in form of money, aid and support that will be sent directly to Chile’s most affected areas.

Esta campaña ha sido el  resultado de la Conferencia sobre la Identidad Latinoamericana realizada el día 17 de abril  organizada por la Coordinadora Latinoamericana.

Consideramos que hay un vacío en los datos estadísticos en UK sobre cuántos somos los latinoamericanos, y otros datos de vital importancia  para  la mejora de servicios y el reconocimiento más amplio de nuestra comunidad.

Frente a una propuesta que viene circulando  según la cual los latinoamericanos en UK debemos ser  reconocidos como “Ibero American Spanish and Portuguese Speaking” IS/SPS   ) manifestamos lo siguiente:

Que,  ser reconocidos  como hablantes de las lenguas hispánica o portuguesa  no nos garantiza a los latinoamericanos ser reconocidos como minoría étnica en este país. Pues, al ser contabilizados como “Ibero American /SPS”  nunca sabremos cuántos somos, ya que  los latinoamericanos no aparecemos explícitamente en esa denominación, sólo estamos presupuestos. Por ello, consideramos que es un término inadecuado e inexacto el cual  se quiere imponer a nuestra comunidad inconsultamente.

A diferencia de los que provienen de los países  de la península ibérica, los latinoamericanos  tenemos restricciones  para trabajar y residir libremente en UK.  Muchos  latinos que se hallan en situación de indocumentados en UK, en España y en el resto de Europa,  son discriminados o perseguidos en virtud de la ignominiosa  Directiva del Retorno.

Consideramos que en el próximo censo del 2011 debemos ser reconocidos como  LATINOAMERICANOS/AS,  así como en todo otro formulario de los gobiernos locales. Los latinoamericanos queremos nuestro propio casillero, un nombre que responda a nuestra identidad. Queremos que se nos respete y que no nos sigan tratando como ex colonias.  Además el término IA/SPS  excluye a las culturas y lenguas aborígenes de nuestros países. Latinoamérica se integra hoy cada vez, incluye a Brasil y otros países del Caribe que  hablan idiomas distintos al español y al portugués.

Junto con el reconocimiento formal, llamamos a persistir en el respeto de los derechos de todos los inmigrantes, sin discriminación de la lengua o de la etnia,  al cese de la persecución y Papeles para Todos, al respeto a la sindicalización y a un salario justo,  además de otros derechos esenciales de toda persona o minoría. Esto resulta cada vez más  esencial en una sociedad  que es multicultural y se precia de ser tolerante.

Invitamos a todos los grupos comunitarios latinoamericanos, iglesias, grupos deportivos, culturales, y de servicios  a unirse a esta campaña.  Anunciamos la realización de un Foro para continuar con la discusión y esclarecimiento sobre nuestra identidad  y nuestra situación en UK para el 19 de junio de este año.

El libro está basado en una serie de entrevistas a 25 yemeníes ex -trabajadores del acero en Sheffield a través de las cuales se van descubriendo sus experiencias del diario vivir,  sus luchas, frustraciones, anhelos y añoranzas en el nuevo medio social e industrial del Sheffield de la posguerra.

Kevin trabaja su investigación desde ‘afuera’ ya que se empeña en que los entrevistados sean los que vayan reconstruyendo, con sus propias voces y sin interferir en sus propias formas narrativas y frecuentemente expresadas en primera persona, sus vidas sacudidas  por el racismo, explotación, aislamiento y desempleo, pero más que nada sus respuestas individuales y colectivas a éstos. Como resultado natural de este proceso  la investigación no aparece sobrecargada de fechas ni derivada de informes y de fuentes lejanas.

“No sé qué me hizo venir a Inglaterra, fue una coincidencia,  ¿Ve?  Sabe que uno algunas veces no puede planear las cosas.  ¿Sabe lo que le digo?  Hablaba  con un amigo mío que ha ido a Inglaterra, le digo, ‘¿Qué hay en Inglaterra?.  El dice, ‘Sabes, es otra clase de vida.”  Sabes, cuando joven eres libre como un pájaro, puedes volar de una árbol a otro. Entonces postulé a sacar el pasaporte británico  y me lo dieron, sabes.  Lo conseguí porque, como sabes, somos británicos, de Yemen. No teníamos  ningún  problema.”

“Antes no sabía nada de Inglaterra.  En blanco, sabe… Había oído algo de Londres en la radio, ¿sabe?. “Éste es servicio mundial de la BBC’ o algo parecido, ¿sabe? Éste es Londres”.  Había visto gente inglesa en Yemen, usted sabe, en nuestro país.  Oh, era gente de clase superior, no de la clase obrera”

El estudio significa un enorme paso en el rescate de la experiencia e historia de esta comunidad árabe en Sheffield, la primera comunidad musulmana que vino a establecerse en el Reino Unido, “en medio del racismo anti-árabe de durante y después de la guerra de Suez y que trabajaron en las peores condiciones en las acererías bajo el mando de los jefes que justificaban las condiciones de trabajo de los trabajadores no blancos por medio del uso de una mezcla de ideología racista y del uso del idioma.”

Es también un enorme aporte en términos de dimensionar la contribución de la comunidad yemení a la economía y a la sociedad de Sheffield y de Inglaterra la que seguía siendo muy poco conocida hasta ahora.

Un gran acierto de Kevin Searle y de la editorial Cultural Identity Studies.

Desde esta tribuna hacemos llegar nuestro aprecio y reconocimiento a los 25 ex colegas del acero que con sus voces proyectan vida a la investigación y quiebra el silencio cómplice con el que se ha envuelto las manos y rostros de las comunidades no nativas de Sheffield
