Chile SCDA is a community organisation which has evolved over thirty five years. It was reconstituted in 1993 to provide support and services to resident Chilean and Latin American community in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
The Sheffield and Rotherham area is the home of an important number of Chileans. Until 1973 there were only few Latin American residents in the region. The military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet on 11th September 1973 against the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende resulted in the exile of more than one million Chileans. Bothe Sheffield and Rotherham accepted a considerable number of these exiles: the third largest intake in the UK after London and Manchester.
As political refugees Chileans enjoyed widespread support from human rights organisations, churches and, in particular from the labour movement and Sheffield City Council.
Since their arrival one of the community’s main concers has been the preservation and maintenance of our social and cultural vaues. These concerns have been translated into the development of not only inward-looking cultural and educational initiatives but also initiatives at disseminating and sharing both mainstream and popular culture of Chile and Latin America. However one of the main strand of the community’s work has been to inform and disseminate and inform local residents about the human and social tragedy brought about by the Pinochet dictatorship.
