Some 5,000 people, including friends and relatives of the victims of the dictatorship, participated on Sunday in a procession at Santiago’s General Cemetery to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 1973, military coup in Chile, but the event ended with several violent incidents and a number of arrests.

The march, which began around 11 a.m. (1400 GMT) a few blocks from the center of the capital, was conducted without problems, but a few minutes after the start of a cultural event at the cemetery entrance, some 50 masked people began to cause disorder and clash with police.

Members of the Carabineros (Chile’s militarized police) responded with tear gas and water cannon to defend themselves from the shower of projectiles thrown by the masked protesters, many of whom threatened members of the media who were on the scene.
