British and Irish Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War Exhibition in Rotherham.
Antifascistas tells the story of the 2,500 volunteers from the British Isles who joined the legendary International Brigades to defend democracy during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39.
Produced by the International Brigade Memorial Trust, the exhibition sets out the reasons why the volunteers took the extraordinary decision to risk their lives in a foreign war – in which more than 500 of them died.
7- 18 September 2010 at 7:30pm. The Old Market, Market Street, Rotherham S60 1QA
The role of their British Battalion in many of the key battles in Spain is described, along with brief biographies of outstanding individuals who took part.
Using many contemporary photographers & striking images, Antifascistas brings to life the idealism, commitment & sacrifice of these men and women who served in the International Brigades and continued the fight against fascism during the Second Ward and beyond.

As Archivist of the Jewish Military Museum of AJEX (Association of Jewish Ex-Servicmen and Women of the UK – many of whom served in Spain against Franco before WW2) – I have written a detailed study of the 25% Jewish complement of the whole IB in Spain, published on the web (jewishvirtuallibray – or google on Against Fascism, Jews who served in the SCW) but have not had the chance yet to see the exhibition (we have a standing exhibition on the Jewish fighters at our museum in Hendon) . I hope the Jewish contribution to the British batallion has been acknowledged – up to 15%, although we were less than half of ONE % of the population, as now.

Two friends came to the exhibition in Manchester with my wife and I. All of us were surprised at the large attedance and delighted with the presentation, which showed the Volunteers as real people with natural fears, failures and heroism.
“Carve their names with pride.”
