Local singer and musician Tony Corden has become a passionate follower of Victor Jara’s work. He has joined with friends to form a local group, Cloud Cuckoo, which regularly performs Victor’s songs and music. He visited Chile for a month last autumn to meet musicians and others with memories of Victor including Joan Jara and his adventures were featured in Radio Four’s "Home Truths" programme on March 26th.

There have already been a number of successful evening events in Machynlleth, featuring not only Cloud Cuckoo’s interpretations but also others, including a musician from Finland inspired by Victor Jara, along with film footage about his life.

The organisers have been encouraged by the success of these events to plan a weekend of celebration. Machynlleth’s main art gallery will have an exhibition of posters, photographs and Chilean tapestries: the work of the Los Andes group of Chilean refugees living in South Yorkshire. There will be a concert of local musicians on Friday evening. Quimantu has already agreed to play on Saturday evening and other groups like Caliche have confirmed their participation in this cultural event.  The aim is that the whole day on Saturday and the morning of Sunday will be filled with music workshops, street theatre and human rights discussion.

Sheila Cassidy the British doctor who suffered extreme torture for helping an opponent of the Pinochet regime that tortured and murdered Victor Jara has agreed to take part. Also Dafydd Iwan, the leader of Plaid Cwmru, the Welsh Nationalist party, and a folk singer who composed a song about Victor Jara after his murder after the coup will perform and contribute to the discussion workshops.
